    Goodluck Jonathan’s minister of Police Affairs and two-time governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State, Adamu Maina Waziri, has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

    Waziri announced his resignation at Dogotebo Ward in Potiskum Local Government Area on Tuesday, stating it was a difficult decision to leave the party after many years of service and loyalty.

    “I have decided to resign my membership because of the provision in the party’s constitution, which requires me to come to my ward — Dogotebo in Potiskum, located in a primary school that is older than me — to submit my resignation letter and formalise the action I took about a week ago,” he said.

    “I want to assure you that this is a very hard decision. But the young man standing in for the chairman is one of my boys, and I urge them to join us in the near future.”

    In a similar move, the wife of the former governor of Adamawa State, Zainab Boni-Haruna, has also left PDP.

    The 68-year-old Yobe native announced her resignation at Kukar Gadu community in Fika Local Government Area and declared her decision to join the newly formed ADC coalition.

    “I have come to my home and village to inform them that I have ceased to be a member of the People’s Democratic Party. I have tendered my letter of resignation and handed over my membership card to the party,” she said.

    “I urge them to join the new train of the coalition, called Sabuwar Tafiya (new journey) in Hausa, to elect leaders who will bring better governance to our people.”

    She encouraged her supporters and other well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    Although the new ADC coalition is barely a week old, it has already begun to attract several politicians in Yobe, particularly those aggrieved within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed 150 as the minimum cut-off mark for admission into Nigerian universities for the 2025/2026 academic session.

    JAMB disclosed this decision via its X handle on Tuesday after the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

    According to the announcement, students are qualified to get admissions into any university of their choice with a 150 score in the just concluded JAMB exam.

    It further reviewed the cut-off mark for colleges and polytechnics. Making it 140 for colleges of nursing, 100 for polytechnics, and 100 for colleges of education.

    The post reads, “The minimum admissible scores for admissions for the next academic session have been fixed at 150 for universities, 100 for polytechnics, 100 for colleges of education, and 140 for colleges of nursing sciences by the stakeholders (Heads of Tertiary Institutions).”

    The development comes months after JAMB admitted to technical glitches in the conduct of the 2025 UTME.

    Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has told the former Governor of Anambra State not settle for the vice presidential candidate of the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

    Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday night, July 3, Baba-Ahmed argued that Obi’s performance in the last election made him overqualified to be anyone’s VP in 2027.

    “The position of VP is very big. Anyway, I wanted to be, and I was rigged out. But I think Peter Obi should not be a VP, having gotten a disputed 10 million votes,” he said.

    According to him, the coalition’s presidential ticket is effectively between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Obi. However, he insisted Obi should not settle for the VP slot.

    The 55-year-old also rejected the narrative that only a coalition of opposition politicians can defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the 2023 election as proof.

    “It’s all about a narrative that was quickly sold to Nigeria — that to defeat Tinubu, it has to be a coalition. Coalition is good, but in 2023 we defeated APC, PDP. There was no coalition in the Labour Party,” he said.

    He stressed that the real coalition Nigeria needs is not among politicians but at the ballot box.

    “The real coalition we need is in the ballot box. The real coalition is of votes at the ballot box. You protect them all the way to declaration,” he said.

    Bayelsa state High Court Judge, Justice E.G. Umokoro, who was kidnapped by masked gunmen in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, on Saturday, June 21, has regained his freedom.

    Justice Umukoro regained his freedom on Thursday, after spending days in the kidnappers’ den.

    The Department of State Services (DSS) in Bayelsa State confirmed the judge’s release but did not disclose further details regarding the circumstances of his freedom.

    It was earlier reported that on the day of his abduction, eyewitnesses said the gunmen, dressed in black uniforms, fired shots at him but missed. The attackers then blocked his path with an unmarked white Hilux van and forcibly took him away.

    The gunmen did not steal the black Toyota Prado SUV he was driving at the time of the abduction.

    The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has affirmed his loyalty and commitment to the Labour Party, saying that he is not in any coalition and hasn’t attended any meetings organised by the group nor has he been invited for any.

    Speaking during an interactive session with members of Abia State Global Economic Council in Umuahia, Otti said he is busy doing the work given to him by Abia people and not looking for where to decamp to.

    While reacting to the claim of a crisis in the Labour Party, the Abia State Governor acknowledged the party had a problem, but fought through the Supreme Court to retrieve the party.

    The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has threatened to sack its party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if he refuses to leave the coalition after 48-hour.

    In a statement released, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, explained that the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership remains vehemently opposed to joining the coalition while dismissing members of the coalition as “power mongers whose only interest was self and not the people.”

    The statement reads, “We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them has refused to defect with him.

    Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.

    Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one Party and another leg elsewhere.

    People that in the morning, they will claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening they are in coalition.

    Nearly 70 percent of Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate. The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of, is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition.

    These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into circle of power, people who are desperate to continue holding on to power.

    The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory.

    I therefore urge all members of the party to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact ahead of future elections.”

    The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has confirmed adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as his party saying no single group can change Nigeria alone.

    Obi stated this in an X post on Thursday, saying it was a difficult but necessary step for Nigeria’s political future.

    The-63-year-old, said the move was instigated by a deep reflection on the nation’s current challenges and the urgent need for transformative leadership.

    He stated that, “This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward.”

    “Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” said Obi.

    The coalition members, which include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former transport minister Rotimi Amaechi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, officially endorsed the ADC as their political vehicle for 2027 at the unveiling in Abuja on Tuesday.

    It was gathered that Obi proposed to serve a single term in office if elected president under the ADC.

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, has cautioned Nigerians once more against agreeing to carry a package or piece of luggage that they are unaware of the content inside.

    Femi, disclosed this on Sunday in his post on X while reacting to a viral video of a man recently arrested by NDLEA for picking up a piece of luggage without first reviewing its contents. After he was interrogated, it was discovered that the luggage contained some hard drugs.

    The post reads, “Please listen to the suspect in this video, he was asked if he packed the bag he was carrying he said no, someone gave it to him. As we always warn, never accept to carry a luggage you don’t know its contents if you’re not complicit & an accessory”

    He stated that ignorance won’t stop the agency from arresting and prosecuting anyone caught with such luggage.

    A Washington Post photo-journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winner, Thomas Pham LeGro, has been arrested and charged with possessing child p0rn images on his computer.

    The 48-year-old appeared before a federal judge in Washington DC on Friday where he was detained ahead of a bail hearing next week.

    The FBI said agents had executed a search warrant at Mr LeGro’s residence on Thursday and seized a number of electronic devices.

    It said that after examining his work laptop agents found a “folder that contained 11 videos depicting child sexual abuse material”.

    The agency added that while carrying out the search, agents spotted what appeared to be “a broken pieces of a hard drive in the hallway outside the room where Mr LeGro’s work laptop was found”.

    In a brief statement, the Washington Post said it “understands the severity of these allegations, and the employee has been placed on leave”.

    LeGro’s case attracts a maximum punishment of 20 years imprisonment if convicted.

    The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Friday, has expressed satisfaction with the judgment by the High Court of Kenya, which declared the abduction and forced transfer of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021 as unlawful and unconstitutional.

    In a statement signed by their spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the judgment as a ‘resounding judicial earthquake’ that vindicates its long-standing position on Kanu’s illegal rendition.

    In a ruling delivered on 24 June 2025, Justice E.C. Mwita slammed both the Kenyan and Nigerian governments for gross violations of Kanu’s fundamental rights and awarded him KSh10 million in compensatory damages.

    Justice Mwita, in his judgment, stated, “The government of Kenya violated the Constitution and Mr. Nnamdi Kanu’s rights and fundamental freedoms. Having entered Kenya lawfully, he was subject to the protection offered by the Constitution of Kenya 2010. However, he was abducted, kept in solitary confinement, tortured, and forcibly removed from Kenya without following the law.”

    The court further declared that Kanu’s abduction, incommunicado detention, and denial of food, water, and medication were flagrant breaches of his constitutional rights. It also ruled that his forcible removal to Nigeria violated Kenyan laws and international legal standards.

    IPOB accused the Nigerian and Kenyan governments of orchestrating a ‘criminal act of state-sponsored international terrorism’ and vowed to pursue global accountability for those involved.

    The group also expressed gratitude to Professor PLO Lumumba, lead counsel in the Kenyan litigation, and Justice Mwita for their “courage, clarity, and tenacity” in delivering the judgment.

    “This verdict places a permanent legal stain on the records of former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, as well as their accomplices,” the statement added.

    IPOB claimed the judgment marks the beginning of a global campaign to hold all perpetrators accountable.

    “All those responsible, in Kenya, Nigeria, or elsewhere, shall be pursued to the ends of the earth under the universal principle of accountability for crimes against humanity,” the statement added.
